Money can solve my problems
Here is something that most people don’t understand… until they get a significant amount of money. And this is the reason Jim Carrey said, “I think everybody should get rich and famous and do everything they ever dreamed of, so they can see that it’s not the answer.”
Most of us think: If only I had enough money, I would not have these problems. If only I had enough money, I could fix everything. I could relieve my discontent, I could do all the things I want to do. I would finally be safe. I would be happy.
But here is what actually happens…
I was talking to a friend of mine and our incomes are several zeros apart. But guess what? It didn’t make any difference. We were both experiencing exactly the same problems!
Because if you have 10 times the money, you have an equitable increase in expenses. Your life usually grows in complexity, and each of those components also have their problems.
So you might think, well I won’t do that if I get money! I will keep all my expenses the same and I will just make my life easier. Good luck with that.
If that were true, you would already be living like that. Money is a reflection of our internal state, our beliefs, our patterns of behaviour, our fears, our saboteurs, our desires, and so on.

Money is an amplifier
I’ll tell you exactly why you will not live happily within your means, and why everyone who has won the lottery or been given an inheritance etc. does not do that either. It is because money is actually an energy. Money is a tool, a facilitator, a magnifier, or amplifier. If you think you are just here to get a job, pop out some kids, party a little and then die, then you are either naive, or sleepwalking through your life – or a very young soul.
Some people believe we are here to learn; and life’s lessons come through the challenges we experience. Some people believe we are here to evolve to our highest creative potential. In either case, the journey is the point. The point is not to be safe and cruise along in a continual state of homeostasis during our life on this earth.
Even if you have no belief or idea about why we are here, just look around you at every other life form on this planet.
There is not a single creature or plant or organism that exists as a static being over the course of its life. The entire natural world is in a continual cycle of growth, transformation, proliferation, destruction and regeneration. You are simply another inhabitant of this planet and thus you are bound by the same natural laws.
So regardless of your belief about why you are here, the laws that govern your existence, the matrix in which you dwell is the same. And if you look at money within that context, you realize that the point of money is not to accumulate enough so that you can remain static, stationery, stable, safe – because that is highly improbable.
Money is an energy
The point of money, is to use it as a tool during this lifecycle. As an energy that facilitates, magnifies, or potentiates. A tool that reveals truths that may be hidden, but have always been there.
The point of money is to use it! PLAY with it, experience it, learn what makes it stagnate, learn what makes it flow, learn how to move it around. Money is chi. Water is chi. Fire is chi. We must become knowledgeable and fluent with these energies in order to live a full and vibrant life here on this planet.
And that is why, no matter how much money we get, we arrange our lives and our creative endeavors and our investments or businesses so that we are never static or safe. We purposely (albeit subconsciously) draw experiences and challenges to ourselves that develop and stimulate our fluency with this energy.
And in fact, we do not even have to arrange for challenges. Simply living on this planet ensures that there is always the risk of a government changing, a war erupting, a natural disaster occurring… And shazam, you have lost all or much of the money energy you accumulated.
If we can learn to view life and money in this context… this understanding and perspective will change everything. We will let go of the childish fantasy that we will be safe and everything will be OK and we will be happy – if we just have enough money.
Why money doesn’t create happiness
We will also realize that poverty consciousness exists regardless of how much, or how little, money we have.
I personally know many people who have multi-millions of dollars and they live in scarcity and fear most of the time. Perhaps they have already lost all their money once or twice before, so they know how precarious it is. Or perhaps they were raised in lack and scarcity – which again is not necessarily related to having money; it is a state of mind and being.
So now even though they have plenty of money in the bank, property assets, insurance policies etc, they still do not feel safe. They do not feel abundance, or peace, and they are not relaxed about money.
They have missed the whole point about money as an energy! They have failed to develop any fluency with money chi. They don’t have the ability to alchemize energy into money. And so their mind, their feelings and their emotional/energy body is still poor.
People say, money can’t buy happiness. And the answer to that is usually, “Oh yes it can – because then I won’t need to live in this shitty apartment and work this shitty job and hate 90% of my life. And I will be able to buy all the nice things I want and go on the holidays that I want and do the things that I love. And that will bring me a whole lot more happiness than I currently have.”
And then we are back to what Jim Carrey said, about wishing everyone could be rich so they could understand that it is not the answer and it does NOT bring happiness.
Because wherever you go, there you are
You will simply continue in the same emotional state, regardless of how much money you have. You may have a brief flare of happiness or something that feels like joy, but it will quickly fade into your usual patterns of sabotage, depression, frustration, and negativity. This is why most lottery winners are completely broke within five years. Because even though they have received all the money they could possibly need or want for several lifetimes, nothing has changed inside of them, and so they re-create the exact same poverty-ridden lifestyle and emotional state.
There are no shortcuts. There is no magic wand. And everything is relative. Whatever state you are in and whatever lifestyle and circumstances you create when you earn $100 a month, will remain when you earn $1000 a month or $10,000 a month. Because money is just an energy.
So don’t wait to have more money to make your life better. That’s not the answer. Instead, start right now with what you have and where you’re at.
I have lived in some of the shittiest apartments you can imagine. I have lived with three people in a 10 foot by 30 foot concrete box with a carpet so dirty you could never take your slippers off. The bathroom was so tiny you couldn’t close the door when you were taking a dump; because your knees stuck out an inch further than the door. We had 1 hotplate to cook on. And you know what? We made that place cozy and funky and artistic.
We hosted dinner parties for up to seven people and we all sat on the floor to eat and had a great time. We even learned to sleep through the jackhammer demolishing the building across the alley, six feet away from our one window, that started up at 6 AM every morning. Those two years in Tokyo were one of the highlights of my life. I may have lived in a shitbox, but it didn’t define me, or determine my experiences, or affect my emotions. Because none of those things are dependent on money, or what money can buy.
Why was money invented?
Think back to where and how money originated. It was a symbol of the units of energy used to produce X. Whether you were growing bananas, or making dining tables, the energy expended was symbolized or represented by an assigned dollar value. And that dollar value was not just related to time or effort.
We, as a group or society, decided which activities held higher value, and thus equated to more units of energy. For example, if you were a doctor, we decided a unit of energy was worth $100. If you were a construction worker, we decided a unit of your energy was worth $20.
The value assigned to your unit of energy was determined by things like degree of difficulty, cost of materials, cost and length of training, admiration, scarcity, resources, etc. Again, the money (worth) is symbolic.
Money is a biofeedback machine
The stock market is another excellent example of money as pure energy; where simply the belief, or emotion felt can determine the company’s value. For example, the company that was assigned a value of $100 million can change literally overnight to a value of $75 million if the company CEO says something that changes the way people feel about the company.
The dot com era is a wonderful example of how massive amounts of money can materialize due to pure emotion; from hope or belief in an idea alone.
If you have done your work on yourself, if all the elements of yourself and your beliefs are congruent with each other, if you have looked for and removed your blocks and saboteurs to joy and ease and worthiness – then your money game will flow. Because money IS an energy.
And whether you generate $1000 or $1 million depends on how well you’ve done your inner/energy work. Because money is like a biofeedback system.
If money is not flowing to you it is likely because you are incongruent, or you are blocking or constricting the flow, or you are subconsciously sabotaging the flow. Or perhaps you don’t even realize that money is a circle that flows in and flows out – and you are stopping or interfering with that natural cycle.
Ken Honda focuses in on this in his book, Happy Money. He explains why it is just important to be happy about the money you are paying out, as you are about the money you are receiving.
When you receive money from a client or as a gift, you are happy, and you surround that money with blessing and gratitude. He points out how important it is to also surround your outgoing money with blessing and gratitude.
So when you pay your electricity bill, or you pay your taxes, or you pay a supplier… You express how grateful you are, that you have enough money to pay these bills! You bless the money leaving you, so that it can do good in the world and benefit the person receiving it. So that whole circle, of money coming in and money going out, is a blessed happy flow of energy. Make sense?
Perhaps you have beliefs, or patterns of behavior that block this flow? Perhaps you are so focused on what you can get, that you are not celebrating what you can offer? Perhaps you are so focused on your need (lack, scarcity) that you are not focusing on what you can give? What emotion are you eliciting/creating in those who come into contact with you?
All emotions exist as energetic frequencies – what kind of frequencies are you generating that then create your reality?
Think back to a time in your life when things just seemed to happen magically; at the right place and the right timing. Perhaps it was one day, or part of a day where your coffee was perfect, the bus arrived on time, your boss complimented your work, and so on. See if you can remember your emotional state during that time?
Now think back on a day when you ‘woke up on the wrong side of the bed’. You woke up irritated, or grumpy, and lo and behold your entire day (or at least the next few hours) followed suit.
Whatever emotion/frequency you are emitting, sends out a vibration. And what is the Law of Resonance? If I strike a tuning fork at the note of A, every instrument in the room will vibrate at A. Our emotions are frequencies that also emit vibrations… and then everything in our day is stimulated or triggered to vibrate at that same frequency.
The power of your wallet
Of course, the energy of money also extends to the consumer. Whatever you spend your money on, you are supporting. If you want to see a damaging practice or substance disappear, stop purchasing it. It really is that simple.
Factory farmed meat, eggs and milk (aka animal torture) would disappear within three months if only 50% of the people stopped buying it. Farming would switch back to humane, pasture-raised, regenerative practices. Because money is an energy. People vote with their wallet, and if their energy/voice says, Hell no! Then the undesirable practices, products, and substances would disappear in a very short period of time. That is the beauty of money.
When Ian and I got married back in 1995, we purchased only certified organic foods. Both sets of our parents scoffed at us. Most of our friends made fun of us.
Our stance was that, even though organic food was extremely expensive at the time, if we did not support it, it would not grow and expand. We used the energy of our money as a voice to tell the farmers, Yes! keep going. Our energy said, “This is important and this is what mother earth needs us to do. So even though it is crazy expensive, we are fortunate to have enough money to support this, and so we will.”
Other people who did not have as much money as we did, purchased whatever amount they could afford that was organic. Some people could only afford a few certified organic vegetables. Other people could afford organic vegetables, but only a little bit of organic or pasture-raised meat. It didn’t matter. What mattered was that we were using our money energy to speak, to act, to bring into existence what we felt was important and right and true.
Within a couple of years, the price of organic food started dropping. As farmers could sell enough volume to bring their costs down, we then had to pay less for beautiful healthy food.
Within 10 years, both sets of our parents were eating almost exclusively organic food. And most of our friends were also eating as much certified organic food as they could afford.
Farmers Markets had also drastically increased in popularity and number – another very cost-effective way to purchase organic or no-spray produce.
The next step for all of us, is to grow our own food – whether we live in the suburbs or an apartment. In my paradigm, these are all components of holistic success.
I tell my kids, “It’s actually very simple. There is only one question you need to ask yourself and answer: Are you part of the problem, or are you part of the solution?” Which brings us right back to money as an energy. Because the more money you have, the more you can contribute to the solutions.
Poverty is a message from your higher self
So money is not one part of your life, and the rest of your life is something else. Rather, money is simply some of the threads of your mind/body/soul tapestry, part of the energy grid that weaves throughout your entire life, your relationships, your purpose and existence on this planet.
If there is something wrong with your health, it is a sign or message from your subconscious or higher self, that something is wrong, or not optimal, with the way you are moving through life. Likewise, if something is wrong with your finances, with the amount of money you have (versus the amount of money you want) or how you manage it, it is simply a sign that something is wrong – with the way you are living and moving through your life.
Lack of money is simply a message, or signpost from your higher self (deeper wisdom) saying, “Pay attention! Time to lean in. Time to examine what beliefs, behaviours, patterns, lack of skill or knowledge, lack of joy, lack of peace, or lack of life force energy is creating this roadblock in the natural flow of an abundant universe.”
Nature – in its natural state with no interference from humans – is full of abundance! You literally cannot stop nature from growing, proliferating, expanding. Nature also exists within the natural cycles of ebb and flow. Nature does not try to grow new roots or create fruit during the cold winter. Nature understands timing, and understands how to align with flow for maximum results with the least effort. Nature does not sabotage itself, or get in its own way. You see how effortless abundance can be?
The same dynamics apply whether you live in Nairobi, Athens, Bangkok, or New York:
- How do you define success?
- What is your money biofeedback system telling you about your beliefs, blocks, saboteurs and patterns?
- How’s your fluency with money chi? Is your money a blessed circle of incoming and outgoing?
- What beliefs did you inherit from family that are keeping you locked in energies of lack, fear, or poverty consciousness?
- How are you voting with your wallet – right now, today – whether you have $10 or $1000 in there?
I’ve covered a number of different pieces of the money/success picture in this article. Each section could likely be a chapter in a book. But I wanted to give you a snapshot overview to stimulate your thinking and brainstorming process as you examine your own life.
If you’d like to delve a bit deeper and look at the foundational money story you inherited from your family, then enter your name and email below. Thanks Jini for this reminder about money as chi and also that in reality having MORE money is not going to buy me happiness – and YES I too have wealthy friends who are ARE NOT happy!!!! Siobhan
We all need that reminder! I had a vitriolic response from a (now former) friend when I refused to ‘loan’ him $15K for a court case. He figured that since I was a “rich person” money means nothing to me and of course I should help a friend in need.
Since he’s already $125K in debt to his lawyer, I was going to suggest a trade: I pay him $15K for his ATV’s and then we would have an agreement where he can buy back the ATVs for the same price whenever he likes. But we never got there, as his rage that I didn’t immediately say Yes was unbelievable.
What surprised me was the extreme righteous indignation he felt. And the conviction that because I received some help from family in my life, that I then owed him some help. And then all the judgments and vitriol against “rich people” that rolled out… it was a legit assault.
And of course, he had NO awareness that all his judgments were going to ensure he stayed poor. It’s sad, but he’s a prime example of what Jesus meant when he said, “The poor you shall always have with you.”
When your subconscious – with all its trauma and unhealed wounds – drives the bus, you can’t change the direction as long as you remain unaware. And when someone tries to bring some awareness, if you respond with anger, then you’re going to stay firmly on the road you’re on!
It’s really sad and hard, because I know he’s a representative of how much of the world thinks/feels… and I don’t know how to reach or help people like that. Not only will they continue to suffer, but it’s not good for society (or children) when you have such a wealth gap.
