A good death is as important as a good birth; they are two milestones of human existence. My father was an eye doctor – he took drugs and he prescribed drugs. So his death by intravenous drug injection was congruent with his life and his ethics.
In a way, I think he always knew he would need help dying. He used to say to my brother – who is a medical doctor – “When the time comes, if I’m suffering, you make sure you kill me. Don’t leave me like that.”
Fortunately MAID – medical assistance in dying – is legal in Canada, so we didn’t have to contemplate whether my brother was willing to risk his medical license to help Dad leave the planet!
In this podcast, I’ll tell you the story of that death. We’ll talk about the possible effect of the MAID drugs. I’ll give you my insights into the process leading up to severe decline, and give you some insights into dealing with your own aging parents.
